Douglas A. Hastings is a Strategic Advisor with EBG Advisors, Inc. He is a nationally recognized health care transaction lawyer and advisor on health system change. For more than 35 years, Mr. Hastings and his colleagues have designed, implemented, and successfully closed scores of complex health care transactions on behalf of hospitals, health systems, academic medical centers, post-acute providers, large medical groups, and health plans. Described in Chambers USA as a "visionary" and "transactional genius," he has advised a wide array of health care companies on the strategic considerations, corporate architecture, governance, and regulatory compliance components of proposed transactions, including the payment and delivery reform, antitrust, exempt tax, and fraud and abuse implications.
Since 2001, he has been closely involved at the national level with efforts to improve the quality and cost efficiency of the U.S. health care system, and is known for his role in the launch of accountable care organizations and population health initiatives in both the public and private sectors.
Mr. Hastings served on the Board on Health Care Services of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) from 2003 to 2011 and on the IOM's Committee on Geographic Variation in Health Care Spending and Promotion of High-Value Care from 2010 to 2013. He is a Past President and Fellow of the American Health Lawyers Association.
Named in 2006 as the first Chair of the Board of Directors of Epstein Becker Green, Mr. Hastings served in that role until January 1, 2014. Currently, as Chair Emeritus, he is an advisor to the firm on strategy, health care policy, and business opportunities.
In 2014, Mr. Hastings was invited to join the Healthcare Executives Study Society, a group primarily comprised of large health system CEOs that seeks to advance the state and art of executive leadership and influence the development of health care public policy.
For many years, Mr. Hastings has been cited among the "Leaders in Their Field" in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, for health care transactions nationwide, and is now ranked as a Senior Statesman (2015-2017). In 2013, he was elected to the BTI Client Service All-Star Team for his "extraordinary client service" and "willingness to go above and beyond expectations." In 2011, Mr. Hastings was named to The National Law Journal's list of "Most Influential Lawyers." In 2010, he was presented with the David J. Greenburg Service Award from the American Health Lawyers Association; received the BNA Insights Award for his article "The Timeline for Accountable Care"; and was named by Nightingale's Healthcare News as one of 10 significant health care industry decision-makers. Mr. Hastings has been annually selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America© since 2007, The Legal 500 United States since 2011, and the Washington DC Super Lawyers list in the area of Health Care, since 2007.
